Report
Lala Lajpatrai Institute of Management (LLIM) one of the premier management institutes in Mumbai had conducted a social initiative named ‘Dawat-e-Lala’. The idea originated from this one line ‘Aaj ek din Mumbai mai koi bhookha nahi soyega’ and from that line Dawat-e-lala was born. The concept behind the commendable initiative is to feed underprivileged and needy individuals on Mumbai’s railway stations or streets with home-cooked sanitary food.
‘Dawat-e-Lala’ garnered huge support from all the LLIM students along with their faculties Dr. Arati Kale and Dr. Priyadarshini who volunteered for the cause and actively stepped out in big numbers and participated on the day. All the volunteers agreed on Vada pav as a standard cuisine and many other tasty menu selections based on the volunteers’ preferences. The volunteers also distributed frooti and milkshakes to beat the Mumbai heat. To coordinate all efforts; area-specific, for example, central, western, harbour, and south-Mumbai. Volunteers formed WhatsApp groups and coordinated in smaller groups to reach out to over 50 railway stations around Mumbai. The volunteers then shared their photos and experiences with the groups, which the students subsequently compiled and collated into a Facebook post. The student volunteers while sharing their experiences became emotional and shared how they felt the joy of giving and were very grateful for such an opportunity. The students also requested the faculty to hold more such social initiatives and promised to actively participate in the forthcoming initiatives today.
‘Dawat-e-Lala’ provided the perfect learning experience to the students who witnessed the other side of the world where life is different and all they hope for is one meal for the day. They understood the happiness in giving and the value it adds as an individual to give back to the society as “Service to Man Is Service to God”. They realized that these people who struggle every day for their living are expressive, affectionate and most importantly they value every little things around them where we learn true compassion and be thankful for what we have.
These activities not only help alleviate hunger in the community but also teach students valuable life skills, empathy, and the importance of social responsibility. They also strengthen the bonds between students, teachers, and the local community, fostering a sense of belonging and solidarity.
All the volunteers and professors involved with the cause worked hard to make “Dawat-e-Lala” a big success in terms of the number of individuals it served, achieving its purpose of immeasurable happiness for both the underprivileged people and the volunteers!
